Obituary

Brian Nelson Hanson, 70, of Brattleboro, died at Cheshire Medical Center on February 6th, 2019, from cancer.

Brian was born August 23, 1948, in Baraboo, WI, to parents Donna Marie Nelson (d. 2014) and Robert John Hanson (d. 2019). Brian spent most of his childhood in Claymont, DE, with siblings Robert, Barry, Sandra, and Laurie. An avid athlete in high school, Brian played both varsity basketball and baseball and swam competitively on the Radnor Green Swim Club.

On March 11, 1969, Brian was drafted into the US Army and served in Vietnam, where he earned a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and other medals. He was a proud veteran, and spent some time volunteering at a Vet Center in the 1980s.

After his discharge from the Army, Brian earned a BAAS in Biology from the University of Delaware. It was in Delaware that he met his wife of 45 years, Arlene (née Hash). The two married on June 9, 1973, in Wilmington, DE. They welcomed son Eric in 1981, and daughter Jill in 1983.

Brian began his long, successful career as a Fisheries Biologist at Ichthyological Associates in Summit, DE. He published several academic papers in the 1970s and 80s, and distinguished himself as a regional expert in Radio Telemetry. His career brought him and his family to Marlboro, VT, in 1991, when his then-employer, Normandeau Associates moved into a new office in Westmoreland, NH.

Moving to Vermont awakened in Brian a fervent love for the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. He enjoyed watching both teams on NESN, and savored a few games at Fenway Park and McCoy Stadium, where the Pawtucket Red Sox play.

Most recently, Brian enjoyed his retirement with his wife Arlene, and getting to know his grandchildren. Their granddaughter Mabel was born in January 2017 to daughter Jill and her husband Alex Dash, of Los Angeles, CA. Their grandson Austin was born in February 2017 to son Eric and his wife Alyssa Wood, of Pawtucket, RI. When not spending time with his children and grandchildren, Brian enjoyed golfing with friends, playing pool at the VFW, going to monthly trivia nights with the Sunrise Rotary Club of Brattleboro, and reading.

Brian was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Besides his wife, children and grandchildren, he is survived by his four siblings, 26 nieces and nephews, and 20 great-nieces and nephews.

Brian’s wife and children will host a celebration of his life at the American Legion in late March.
