Obituary

Brattleboro- Joan E. Gray, 72, of Lynwood Drive (MHP) died Sunday morning, April 28, 2019 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.

Joan was born in Hartford, Connecticut on April 1, 1947 the daughter of Kenneth and Norma (McGrath) Ashley. She was raised and educated in Hartford and was a graduate of Buckley High School.

Following her graduation Joan was married to Theodore Gray, they resided in Hartford Connecticut, where they raised their three children; Ted, Tim & Tami. Although they remained friends, the marriage ended in a divorce.

Later in life she met and fell in love with Richard McCarthy with whom they had Thereasa.

A resident of Brattleboro since 1969 she had been employed for fifteen years as an Accounts Payable clerk at C&S Grocers Wholesale in Brattleboro where she retired from in 2002.

Previously she worked for the Edge Company and several Brattleboro downtown restaurants that included, Mike’s, Alice’s and Ray’s, all located on Elliot Street and The Lions Den, later known as Green Door on upper Canal Street. Her position at the restaurants spanned from serving as a manager, bartender, waitress and cook.

Of her pastimes and interests, Joan enjoyed playing cribbage and dice, listening to Country & Western music, travel of the countryside at which she did with her life long partner & companion of over 40 years; with Richard. She loved time shared with her family especially her grandchildren & great- grandchildren. She was also an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan.

Survivors include: her partner, Richard McCarthy of Melbourne, Florida; two sons, Theodore A. Gray, Jr. of Brattleboro and Timothy A. Gray, Sr. & his wife Sheila of Perkinsville; two daughters, Tami Lee Gray of Brattleboro and Thereasa McCarthy Clark & her husband Wayne of Springfield, Vermont; one sister, Nancy Gosselin & her husband Robert of East Hartford, Connecticut; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Carol Kleina (2015) and a nephew, Joseph “Joey” Kleina (1993).

In honor of Joan’s final wishes there are no formal funeral services scheduled. A memorial gather may be held at a later date.
