Brattleboro - Mary Catherine McAlister, 80, passed away while surrounded by her children on Thursday, March 14, 2019.
Mary was born in Balintaggart, County Wexford, Ireland on February 4, 1939, the daughter of Daniel Patrick and Geraldine Margaret (Crean) Murphy.
A former resident of Milford Haven, Dyfed, Wales Mary attended nursing school where she received her State Registered Nurses license. She had been a resident of Brattleboro for the past 44 years.
Mary worked as a nurse’s aide at the former Linden Lodge Nursing Home retiring in 1988. She was an active volunteer at the Gathering Place Adult Day Care when the program was located at Hilltop House on Harris Avenue.
A devout Catholic, Mary was a communicant of Saint Michaels’ Roman Catholic Church. Mary was a passionate gardener and avid reader, and was very proud of her Irish heritage. Her life centered around her family who meant the world to her.
On November 28, 1959 Mary married her soulmate H. James McAlister at Saint Francis Catholic Church in Milford Haven who predeceased her on September 3, 2017.
Mary is survived by her son Shamus McAlister and wife Mary of Hinsdale, daughters Kathryn Young and husband Robert of Mansfield MA, and Geraldine Hopkins and husband Rick of Brunswick GA. Also, four brothers, John and Sylvester Murphy both of Brattleboro, James Murphy of Hinsdale and Liam Murphy of Charlotte, three sisters, Kathleen Wellington of Hinsdale, Margaret Bober of Brattleboro and Bridget Leclaire of Chesterfield, five grandchildren, Patrick, Stephen and Meghan Hopkins, and Taylor and Paige Young. Mary also leaves her beloved cat Smokey. Additionally, Mary leaves many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Mary was predeceased by two brothers, Donal and Thomas Murphy and a sister, Geraldine “Dinah” (Murphy) Dromgoole.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be conducted Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 1:00 pm at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Locust Ridge Cemetery. Following the committal rites, a reception will be held at Brigid's Kitchen on Walnut Street.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mary’s name may be made to the Windham County Humane Society, P.O. Box 397, Brattleboro, VT 05302.
