Bennington- Paul Eugene, “Gene” Guthrie, 81, of Garfield Drive, a lifelong resident of Brattleboro, died early Saturday morning, February 16, 2019 at the Vermont Veterans Home following a period of declining health.
Gene was born in Brattleboro on July 30, 1937 the son of Paul and Frances (Cummings) Guthrie. He was raised and educated in Brattleboro and attended Saint Michael’s Parochial and High School.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army enlisting into active service on December 19, 1955 stationed stateside at Fort Dix. He was honorably discharged from active service on December 18, 1957 at the rank of Specialist 3rd Class returning home to Brattleboro.
Gene worked all of his career as a linotype machine operator in the printing industry at the Brattleboro Daily Reformer, Wall Street Journal, and the former Book Press and American Stratford both in Brattleboro. Following his retirement, Gene worked on a part-time basis as a bartender for several area restaurants and clubs that included, Bob’s Ponderosa, Brattleboro Elks Lodge and for the Brattleboro Outing Club.
He was a member of the American Legion, Brattleboro Post #5, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Brattleboro Aerie #2445, and held a life membership in the B.P.O. Elks, Brattleboro Lodge #1499.
Gene was a lifelong communicant of Saint Michaels’ Roman Catholic Church.
He was well known for his spirit of friendship and easy-going personality and enjoyed socializing with his friends.
Survivors include one brother, Kenneth Guthrie of North Hampton, N.H., three sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, several cousins, and many close friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, James “Jim” Guthrie and Richard “Dick” Guthrie and his sister, Mary Higley.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. with Fr. Justin Baker, pastor, celebrant. Burial will follow in the spring in Saint Michael’s Parish Cemetery where he will be laid to rest in the Guthrie family lot. A reception for family and friends will follow the funeral ceremony to be held at the Elks Club on Putney Road.
