Brattleboro- Steven Randall Vakaros, 30, of High Street died Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with malignant melanoma.
Steven was born in Newport, Rhode Island on May 8, 1986 the son of Frank and Linda (Randall) Vakaros. He was raised and educated in Brattleboro graduating with the Class of 2004 at Brattleboro Union High School.
At the time of his passing Steven was employed by Vermont Road Works based in Guilford. He was slated to be promoted as a foreman with the company working up until the day before he died.
Steven was a co-owner and executive chef with Hazel where he was a co-founder. Previously he worked with his father and family in the day to day operation of Frankie's Pizza in Harmony Parking Lot.
For several years Steven taught and coach youth soccer for the Brattleboro Recreation Department. He was an advocate for personal physical fitness and was committed to a daily workout session at Supreme Fitness in Brattleboro.
Steven was also a devoted family man who cherished time spent with his family especially with his two children.
On May 2, 2015 in Brattleboro he was married to Lindsey Saunders who survives.
Besides his faithful and loving wife Steven is survived by his two children, Julianna and Preston, both at home, his parents of Brattleboro, one sister, Chrissy Howe and her husband Aaron of Brattleboro, his maternal grandmother, Patricia Randall of Newport, Rhode Island and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Additionally he leaves many family members and friends in Greece.
Friends are invited to call at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 to 6 P.M.
In lieu of flowers it is suggested that memorial contributions in Steven's name be made to a special account established for the benefit of his two children through Savings Bank of Walpole, P.O. Box 744, Keene, N.H. 03431. Checks may be made payable to Steven Vakaros Children Fund.
