Chesterfield, NH – Lawrence Gregg Miller, 78, of Foley Road, passed away March 22, 2017 at Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland, NH, following a period of declining health.
Lawrence, who answered to Larry, was born in Asheville, NC on May 14, 1938, the son of Leonard Paul and Effie Salter Miller. He was raised and educated in Asheville and continued on to college to receive his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1960.
After moving to Annandale, VA and taking a job with the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA), he met his future wife and mother to his children, Sandra Lee Morris. They were married on September 13, 1969 at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Annandale, VA. For more than 35 years he worked as a cartographer for the DMA commuting daily to and from Bethesda, MD. Together with Sandra, they raised two daughters, enjoyed many family vacations, movies, plays, and various outdoor activities including family camping trips. Larry loved dinner theatres, old movies and music such as old time country, bluegrass, big band, musicals, and golden oldies. Larry was also a very talented writer, artist, and musician (having played French horn in his high school and college marching band).
Larry and Sandra lived out much of their retirement in the countryside of Culpeper, VA where they enjoyed the abundant wildlife, their many pets, working in the yard, and frequent shopping trips into the town center. In the late '90s they took a camping road trip to Canada and in 2004 they shared a once-in-a-lifetime vacation in Ireland and Scotland to visit their daughter Lisa and her husband, James.
In 2008, when their daughter Kim gave birth to twin girls, Larry and Sandra moved to New England to be closer to her and her family. Then in 2009, they bought a house in Chesterfield, NH and enjoyed a number of years together before the effects of Larry's Alzheimer's started to become more apparent. In life, Larry was a kind, likeable, soft spoken southern gentlemen who was liked by all who knew him.
Besides his wife of 47 years he leaves two daughters, Kimberly Miller King (with Peter Scott King) of Walpole, NH and Lisa Miller Baldini (with James Ugo Lee Baldini) of Lanchester, England. He also leaves behind five grandchildren (Zachary Ryan King, Emma Paige King, Siera Elizabeth King, Ciarán Alexander Baldini, and Eva Elise Baldini), one niece (Yvonne Celeste Plemmons), one nephew (Bryan Phillip Plemmons), a close cousin (Geraldine Clute Brown), and many great-nephews and great-nieces.
Larry was recently predeceased by his beloved sister, Marilyn Miller Plemmons in July of 2016 but his Alzheimer's disease spared him the realization of this terrible loss.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 25th at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Walpole, NH with Rev. Susan de Puy Kershaw, Pastor, celebrant. Burial will follow in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery in Brattleboro, VT.
