Vernon- Joseph Charles "Joey" Shencavitz, Sr., 96, formerly of Upper Dummerston Road died Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017 at Vernon Green Nursing Home.
Mr. Shencavitz was born in Greenvale, Long Island, NY on December 16, 1920 the son of Stanley and Julianna (Dobraska) Shencavitz. He was raised in Greenvale and attended the Roslyn school district, graduating from Roslyn High School, Class of 1939. While attending high school he was the recipient of the American Legion Bronze Medal Award for God and Country.
For many years, with his wife he owned and operated The Flower Stop, a small garden center located in Mt. Sinai, NY. Previously he had been employed as a salesman and later warehouse manager for Gregory Doyle Farming Supplies, a local company that sold fertilizers and insecticides. In his earlier years he worked on his family's farm in Coram, NY.
Mr. Shencavitz enjoyed music and was an accomplished accordion player. He played at many special events that included the annual Saint Patrick's Day dinner at St. Michael's Church in Brattleboro and the Thompson House Nursing Home.
He was well known for his "green thumb" and love for working with plants. In 1993, with his wife he established the Garden of Innocence at Saint Michaels Church which they maintained every year. In conjunction with his love of music and gardening, he also enjoyed golfing.
A former longtime resident of Mount Sinai, he was a communicant of Infant Jesus Parish in Jefferson, NY. With his wife he moved to Brattleboro in 1989.
On February 6, 1944 in Port Jefferson, NY he was married to Josephine Diaz who survives.
Besides his faithful and devoted wife of 73 years he leaves three sons, Joseph Jr. of Marysville, WA, Gerald of Mt. Desert Island, ME and Peter of Brattleboro, two grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, John, Anthony and Phillip Shencavitz and two sisters, Stella Malik and Alice Klewicki.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11:00 A.M. at Saint Michael's Catholic Church with Fr. Justin Baker, pastor, celebrant. Committal rites and burial will follow in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home Thursday from 2 to 4 P.M.
