Brattleboro - Myrtle F. Stowell, 94, of Western Avenue, a lifelong resident of West Brattleboro passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home late Wednesday morning, April 26, 2017 following a period of declining health.
Mrs. Stowell was born in Brattleboro on December 20, 1922 the eldest daughter of Guy and Marion (Wilson) Fletcher. She attended Brattleboro public schools and was a graduate of Brattleboro High School, Class of 1940.
With her husband, she owned and operated Stowell Electric. The couple owned the business for 37 years until retiring in 1994. For many years she enjoyed time spent at her family's camp in Stratton and wintering with her husband in Bayonet Point Florida.
She was a longtime member of First Congregational Church and was active with several church committees through the years. Mrs. Stowell was a keen bridge player and avid golfer and member for many years of the Brattleboro Country Club.
With her husband she enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the former Green Mountain Squares Square Dance Club of Brattleboro. Mrs. Stowell was also a member of the Thursday Night Club Group and the West Busy B's Women's Club.
On January 6, 1944, in Montgomery, Alabama she was married to her childhood sweetheart, Hugh Francis, "Ozzie" Stowell. At the time her husband was stationed in Thomasville, Georgia during the war. Her faithful and devoted husband of 63 years predeceased her on May 24, 2007.
Survivors include one son, Larry Stowell and wife Regina of Westmoreland, NH and a daughter, Linda Dix and husband Gary of Hinsdale; two sisters, Ruth Struthers of Brattleboro and Margaret Bemis of West Chesterfield; four grandchildren, Melanie (David) Stowell, Jennifer (Donovan) Danforth, Judith (Jason) Sullivan and Amy (Charles) Stromberg; seven great grandchildren, Tyler, Benjamin, Cobe, Kelton, Emily, Kylee and Alaric, and several nieces and nephews.
Additionally she leaves a host of close friends and her devoted and dedicated team of caregivers, Elise, Margie, Frank, Jenny, Adele, Emily, Pat, Collen, Star, Laurie, Debbie, Sherri, Mary and Margaret.
A simple graveside committal service will be conducted Monday at 11:00 AM. in the family lot in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery on Orchard Street with Pastor Phil Nelson, officiating.
