Turners Falls, MA - Debbie Newman Wait, 56, of Goddard Avenue in Turners Falls, MA passed away on Monday evening July 17th at home in the presence of her loving family following a courageous battle with cancer. She took on this daunting life challenge with her ever-present optimism, a brave spirit and a warrior’s heart.
She was born in Brattleboro, VT on July 29, 1960, the daughter of Winston and Esther (Kerylow) Newman of Hinsdale, NH.
Debbie was a devoted and loving mother and wife. Her life was always centered on her family. She enjoyed antiquing with her husband, cooking and baking favorite dishes for her family, creating intricate and beautiful crochet handiwork, and going on meandering adventures with her sisters. She had a fondness for and collected merry snowmen. Debbie delighted in celebrating and decorating for holidays. Purple was her favorite color. Debbie was a loyal friend and a fierce advocate for those who needed help.
Debbie’s life was filled with joy when her granddaughter Ashley, Jacob and Kabita’s daughter, arrived on June 3, 2014. Everyday, Ashley brought sunshine, laughter and a very special kind of love to the grandmother she adored.
Debbie worked for many years at Phoenix Insurance in Greenfield before their corporate office was moved to Hartford, CT. She embarked on a new career and became a Massachusetts licensed real estate associate and joined Geri Johnson & Associates in Gill.
Always a hard worker and creative problem solver, Debbie took great pride in her real estate work and was dedicated to all her buyers and sellers. Geri Johnson praised Debbie’s commitment, “she was so enthusiastic about her work, it wasn’t work. Her clients had so much respect for her and her efforts on their behalf. Through the demanding process of becoming a homeowner, or during the many stresses of selling a home, Debbie took care of every detail”.
Debbie married the love of her life, David R. Wait, on January 17, 1981 in Vernon, VT. Besides her husband of 36 years, she leaves three sons, David of Turners Falls, William and his partner Neenah Skiathitis of Wendell, and Jacob and his wife Kabita (Karki) of Turners Falls.
She leaves two sisters Dawn Armelin of Stafford Springs, CT and Katherine Dowd of Brattleboro VT, and a brother, George Newman of Hinsdale NH. Her beloved parents and uncle, Richard E. Newman, predeceased her.
In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is, to have succeeded”.
Debbie succeeded in making a difference in the lives of many. She always offered a helping hand and placed other’s wellbeing first. She was much loved. Her time with us was far too short. Debbie’s love and her wonderful spirit will live in each of our hearts forever.
A celebration of Debbie’s life with remembrances and refreshments will be held at the Thomas Memorial Golf and Country Club in Turners Falls at 1pm on Saturday August 12th.
