Brattleboro - Justine White Houk of Brattleboro, VT, formerly of Chatham, NY and Canton, NY, passed away at 100 years old on Tuesday afternoon, October 17th, 2017 in Brattleboro, VT.

Justine was born May 15, 1917 in Malden, Massachusetts, daughter of Nancy Bunton Kimball and William Levi White.

She graduated from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, where she met William G. Houk, who became her husband on July 30, 1938. She taught with him at St. Lawrence University, where he was a professor of Biology.

Justine played cello in string groups at St. Lawrence University and was active in the First Universalist Church in Canton. Justine liked to sew and hook rugs, lovingly making clothing and other items for her family. She also enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, bowling, and dancing. Justine was a lively and creative woman, sharing her energy and many talents with her family and community. An avid reader, she read a book a day for years and did the New York Times crossword puzzles.

In her 80’s she moved from Canton, NY to live with her daughter Katharine in Chatham, NY, and in her 90’s was in Brattleboro, VT near her daughter Lorraine.

Survivors include her daughters Nancy Houk in Ann Arbor, Michigan; Katharine Houk and her husband Seth Rockmuller in Chatham, NY; Lorraine Cote Houk in Springfield, VT; and her son Carter Houk and his wife Joanne Dafoe Houk in Canton, NY; her grandchildren Tahra May in Myanmar, Benjamin Rockmuller in Manhattan, NY, and Emily Houk in Amherst, MA; and her great-granddaughters Gryffyn and Ursula May. Justine is also survived by some of her Kimball cousins and their offspring.

She was predeceased by her only sibling, Marcia White, in July 1957, and her husband William on January 9, 1996. Her spirit lives on in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered with love and held in our hearts always.
