Brattleboro- John Francis "Jack" Fitzgerald Jr., of Green Meadow Road, West Brattleboro died peacefully on Sunday morning December 24th at the Thompson House where he had been a resident since late-November.
Mr. Fitzgerald was born in Brattleboro, Vermont on July 5th, 1920, the son of John and Marion (Denning) Fitzgerald.
Jack was raised and educated in Brattleboro attending Saint Michael's Parochial School and graduated from Saint Michael's High School with honors. He excelled in baseball and basketball and during these years worked for his father, who owned the Brattleboro Drug Co., learning the family pharmacy business. He went on to attend Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass. and received his Bachelor's degree in business. He spent the rest of his life deeply rooted in his love of Holy Cross, taking many trips to attend alumni events and to see games, especially football, a tradition he shared with many notable local sports enthusiasts.
Shortly after his college career, Jack was beckoned by World War II and joined the Army. He served in the 456th Anti- Aircraft Battalion and saw action in France, Belgium, Luxumberg and Germany with his duty being as the "Message Center Chief" of his unit. Jack was discharged in 1945 and returned to his home town soon beginning his long career as a licensed insurance agent for the John Hancock Company, whom he worked for until his retirement.
Jack played several recreational sports for many years and was a ranked table tennis player in New England winning many tournaments. He was also a part of the original Brattleboro Maples organization and served as their business manager. For over 40 years he enjoyed daily coffee outings with several of his close friends in various local downtown establishments. Jack was a lifelong avid reader and other than his love of family his greatest devotion was to the Roman Catholic Church.
On April 19, 1947, he married Rosalee Smith and they were married until her passing last March. He is survived by his daughter Sharon (Peter Leavens) of Newark, DE, Janet (Peter Stern) of Garberville, CA and Dennis (Maria) of Brattleboro, VT. Also survived by his grandchildren Karla Leavens (Rob Lee and great grandson Maxwell), Noah Stern (Irena), and Gregory Fitzgerald. In addition he is survived by five nieces. He was also predeceased by his sisters Ann and Claire, and son, Kevin.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Michael's Catholic Church on Saturday, April 14th at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Saint Michael's Parish Cemetery.
