Brattleboro- Hugh “Hug” James Bronson, 90, of Greenway Drive in Vernon, a longtime resident of South Street died Sunday morning, December 24, 2017 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital following a period of declining health.
Mr. Bronson was born in New Haven, Connecticut on June 21, 1927 the son of Henry G. and Maude K. (McGowan) Bronson. He was raised and educated in New Haven and Chicopee, Massachusetts graduating from Chicopee High School, Class of 1945. He went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
A former resident of Andover, Massachusetts, he moved to Brattleboro in 1969. He was an independent licensed real estate agent and owned and operated Hugh Bronson Realty. For several years he worked with his brother-in-law in the real estate business, Don Long Real Estate in Brattleboro.
Previously he worked in his family’s automobile business, Bronson Chevrolet in Lawrence, Massachusetts and also an auto dealership owned by his family in Chicopee.
Active civically, he served as a selectman for the town of Brattleboro for twelve years, several terms as chairman. For many years he was an active member of Rescue Inc. and was a certified Vermont Emergency Medical Technician.
Mr. Bronson was a past member of the Brattleboro Rotary Club and past member of the Brattleboro Country Club. He was a communicant of Saint Michael’s Roman Catholic Church.
Of his leisure time activities, he enjoyed golf, fishing, loved his favorite food, lobsters and was a chocoholic. He also collected stamps for many years. An avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, he also enjoyed watching local sports teams.
On March 1, 1949 at Saint Patrick’s Church in Chicopee Falls he was married to Iris Lee Allen. His faithful and devoted wife of 66 years predeceased him on May 13, 2015.
Survivors include one son, Keith Bronson of Whitingham, three daughters, Kathy Welch of South Royalton, Vermont, Marsha Froburg of Haverhill, Massachusetts and Kimberly Gauthier of Lynchburg, Virginia, nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one brother, Henry G. Bronson, Jr. In keeping with Mr. Bronson’s final wishes, burial in Jacksonville Village Cemetery will be private for the immediate family.
