Obituary

Brattleboro - Richard K. Cunningham, 87, died Friday morning, December 29, 2017 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. with his son by his side, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Cunningham was born in Middlebury, Vermont on October 27, 1930, the son of John and Alice (Kirby) Cunningham. He was raised and educated in Middlebury and Brattleboro graduating from Saint Michael’s High School, Class of 1949.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a gunner in the armored tank division, stationed in Okinawa. He was honorably discharged from active service at the rank of Corporal on June 30’th 1960. He was a life member of the American Legion, Brattleboro Post #5.

Mr. Cunningham worked most of his career as a milkman employed by the former Maple Farms Dairy in Brattleboro and later for Week’s Dairy of Chesterfield. He later worked for several years at the former Dunham Brothers Shoe Company in Brattleboro. During his earlier years prior to entering the service he had been employed at the former F.W. Woolworth Store in Brattleboro.

Mr. Cunningham was an accomplished woodworker, enjoyed gardening, camping, trips to the seacoast in New Hampshire and Maine, taking walks in the woods, watching birds at his feeders and time shared with his family. A devoted and loving grandfather he never missed a sporting event or concert. His grandchildren were his pride and joy and meant the world to him. He will always be remembered for his gift of conversation.

On July 12, 1952 at Saint Michael’s Roman Catholic Church he was married to Janet F. Wallace who survives.

Besides his faithful and devoted wife of 65 years he leaves, one son, David Cunningham and wife Barbara of Dayton, Maine, two daughters, Linda Merrill and husband David of Old Orchard Beach, Maine and Diane Olson and husband Steve of Brattleboro, one sister, Alice Worden and husband Ronald of Brattleboro, five grandchildren, Robin and Sara Merrill, Spencer and Benjamin Olson, Ryan Cunningham , one great grandchild McKenzie Cunningham and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Richard “Dickie” Cunningham who died in 1974 and four brothers, John, Robert, William and Hubert Cunningham.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted Sunday 1/7/18 at 11:00 at the American Legion Post #5 on Linden Street in Brattleboro. Following the service lunch will be provided.

A private family burial with full military honors in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery will be conducted in the springtime.

Our family is forever grateful to Dr. Kerrington Smith of DHMC a wonderful, caring man who fought the battle with dad and helped him and all of us through this very difficult time.
