Obituary

Hinsdale, NH - Clarence Cole, age 84 , beloved husband of 33 years to Donna Cole of Hinsdale, NH, passed away Monday, April 16, 2018 with his loving family by his side.

He was born in N. Troy, Vt. on March 13, 1934 and was the son of the late William and Hazel (Merrell) Cole. C.J. resided in Hinsdale for most of his life and was a veteran of the US Army. He entered the Armed Forces when he was 16 years old and told the story that his brother was the one to recruit and swear him into the Army. Sergeant Cole served in the Korean War during his tour of duty between 1950 and 1953, was wounded twice and received various medals and honors as well as the recipient of both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his courageous patriotism. His daughter Terri worked hard to assure that CJ would receive all medals he deserved and was successful in securing these medals in 2012. How fitting that CJ passed away on Patriots Day!

Upon leaving the service, he worked in construction and later was self-employed as a builder, electrician and plumber and was extremely proud of his work. C.J. built his own home, work shop and pool and took great pride in maintaining all of them. In 1953 when CJ was running the Shell station on Putney Road, he decided to have a little fun and bring a smile to people during the holidays. He dressed up as Santa Claus and just waved to everyone as he belted out the typical “HO HO HO”.

For the next 53 years, he wore the same suit on Christmas Eve and visited the elderly, walked down the streets of Brattleboro and Hinsdale and brought sparkles to the eyes of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren when showing up on their doorsteps just as they were getting ready for bed. When anyone needed help, and no matter what time of the day, CJ would always be there. He especially enjoyed country music, a day at Mohegan Sun, watching MASH reruns, traveling, dancing and having special events at his home. We can still hear C.J. saying in a very deep, loud voice…..HOO RAH!

In addition to his loving wife Donna Dartt Cole, he leaves behind his wonderful daughter Terri Kathan and her husband James of Langdon, NH and son Marcus of Charleston, WV; three loving step daughters Kim Mitchell of Hinsdale, Lori Strange of Guilford, Vt. and Gina Hanson of Brattleboro, Vt.; ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

C.J was predeceased by his loving eldest son Alan, three brothers, Charles, Calvin and Clyde a sister Alice LaRosa and a grandchild, Travis.

Friends may call at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home in Brattleboro on Sunday, April 29th from 12 to 2 PM. Graveside services with full military honors will follow in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery in Hinsdale.

Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Brigid’s Kitchen Renovation Fund, 47 Walnut Street, Brattleboro, VT 05301.
