Putney - Marjorie Ritchie Prentiss of Putney, Vermont passed away peacefully on April 20th at the age of 92 at Pine Heights in Brattleboro.
She was born Marjorie Fay Ritchie on March 28, 1926 to Helen Fay and Harry Ellsworth Ritchie in Watertown, CT. The family soon moved to the Boston area where she grew up. Marjorie graduated from East Bridgewater High School in 1943 and Fisher Junior College in 1945.
Marjorie’s first few jobs out of college were at Perkins School for the Blind (Secretary to Social Worker) from 1945-1947, Massachusetts Eye & Ear infirmary (Glaucoma Follow-Up Worker) from 1947 - 1949, and then Cardigan Mountain School (Secretary to the Headmaster) from 1949 - 1952. However, it was her desire to try something different in 1952 that led her to apply for a job at the Experiment in International Living (currently World Learning) - then in Putney, VT. Many friends know the story of the city girl arriving in Brattleboro from Boston by train wearing a suit, gloves and heels only to have to walk across the fields of the Putney Experiment campus (now Greenwood School) for her interview. The culture shock of rural Vermont did not dissuade her. She joined the Experiment that year. It was the beginning of a fulfilling career that lasted 25 years where her organizational skills where utilized in several positions within the organization over the years.
Other jobs Marjorie had were with the Louisiana Girl Scout Council (Office Manager) 1978-1979, the Yellow Barn of Putney 1979-1981 and the Greenwood School (Business Service Administrator) 1981-1988.
She never understood retirement and continued to work in the Greenwood School office part-time until 2005. She volunteered as treasurer with the Putney Federated Church. She loved “Sunday Morning Meet the Press”, crossword puzzles, antiquing, hand quilting and Danish cross-stitch. She always had a dog. She had a great sense of humor. And, her fierce independence and determination allowed her to remain in her Putney home until July 2016. She then moved to Pine Heights.
In 1954 Marjorie met Jon Nathan Prentiss of Putney. They were engaged after knowing one another only 2 weeks. They married on April 23, 1955 in Freeport, Maine. Throughout their marriage they lived at Vermont Academy and Mount Herman School where Jon taught English. They also lived in West Brattleboro. In 1977 they moved to Metairie, LA, only to return to Putney, Vermont in 1979. Jon passed away in September 1991.
Their two children - Jonathan Prentiss of Hinsdale, NH and Rachel Prentiss of Los Angeles, CA - along with her sister Barbara Norris of Denver, Colorado and granddaughter Lynnsey Canady of Eagle Springs, NC, survive her.
