Brattleboro - Etta Jane Mattison, 88, of Maple Street, a native of Brattleboro passed away peacefully Saturday morning, September 1, 2018 at Pine Heights Nursing Home following a period of declining health.
Mrs. Mattison was born in Brattleboro on July 12, 1930, the daughter of Raymond and Ida (Davis) Simonds. She was raised and educated in Brattleboro, graduating from Brattleboro High School Class of 1948.
She had been employed as an optometrist assistant for the late Dr. Rene LaPlante retiring from her position following many years of faithful service. Mrs. Mattison later worked for Business & Tax Consultants in Brattleboro.
With her husband, Mrs. Mattison attended the First Universalist Church of West Chesterfield. Active civically, she was a life member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary, served as President of the Brattleboro Fire Dept. Women’s Auxiliary, and was a member of the Brattleboro Ski Patrol. In her spare time, she enjoyed cross country and downhill skiing, dancing, horses and attending family gatherings. Mrs. Mattison will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and spirit of friendship.
On June 4, 1964 in Brattleboro, she was married to T. Howard Mattison. They shared 52 loving years together before he predeceased her on November 7, 2016.
Mrs. Mattison leaves many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Alan, who died at birth and two brothers, Robert and Edward Simonds.
Graveside committal services will be conducted in the Mattison family lot in Chesterfield West Cemetery on Saturday, September 29th at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow the services to be held at the V.F.W., Carl Dessaint Post #1034, on Black Mountain Road in Brattleboro.
