Obituary

Hinsdale- Raymond Ernest “Ray” Akeley, 77 of Strawberry Lane, a resident of Hinsdale for over 50 years died early Sunday morning, June 9, 2019 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family.

Ray was born in West Halifax, Vermont of December 12, 1941 the son of William and Helen (Pease) Akeley. He was raised and educated in Brattleboro graduating from Brattleboro Union High School with the Class of 1959.

Ray had been employed as a stamper for the former Brattleboro Book Press where he retired from following 50 years of faithful service with the company. On a part-time basis he worked as a bartender at the F.O. Eagles and at the American Legion.

Active fraternally, Ray was a member of the F.O. Eagles, Brattleboro Aerie #2445 and held membership in both the American Legion, Brattleboro Post #5 and the VFW Carl M. Dessaint Post #1034.

Of his pastimes and interests Ray enjoyed playing softball with the greater Brattleboro Men’s Softball League, was active with the Brattleboro Bowling League at Brattleboro Bowl, loved hunting, fishing and time shared with his family. He was an avid New York Yankees fan.

On July 8, 1961 at Saint Michael’s Roman Catholic Church he was married to Sandra Kozyra who survives.

Besides his faithful and devoted wife of almost 58 years he leaves one son, Timothy Akeley of Hinsdale, one daughter, JoAnne Scott and husband Lawrence of West Chesterfield, two sisters, Minnie Mason and Edith King both of Hinsdale, six grandchildren, Krystal, Christopher, Ryan, Joshua, Jacob and Allison, and five great grandchildren, Ana, Elena, Logan, Dominic and Eli Raymond.

Additionally, he leaves a longtime and very close friend, Lanny Haselton of Alabama and many nieces, nephews and several cousins.

He was predeceased by a son Mark Allen Akeley who died on Thursday, May 30, 2019, in Virginia Beach, VA, three brothers, Robert, Kenneth and Lawrence Akeley and a sister Alice Akeley who died in infancy.

A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday at 1:00 P.M. at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home with a reception and luncheon to follow at the American Legion.
