Vernon - George Edward Smith, 84, a longtime resident of Vernon, more recently Huckle Hill Road died Friday evening at Pine Heights Nursing Home following a period of declining health.
Mr. Smith was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts on December 13, 1934 the son of Edward and Rose (Rau) Smith. He was raised and educated in Greenfield attending Greenfield High School.
He had been employed as a machine operator for Erving Paper Company where he retired from following over 27 faithful years with the company. On a part-time basis he worked as a carrier for several Brattleboro Auto dealerships and Sanel/NAPA Auto Parts.
He loved outdoor activities that included snowmobiling, four wheeling, boating and spending time at his camp in Pittsburg, New Hampshire. George also enjoyed woodworking and reading, especially novals about the old west.
George was first married to Sheila Hoar and later married Olive Carey in Vernon on August 22, 1964. Olive predeceased him on March 28, 2011.
Survivors include: four sons, Gregory Smith “Jane” and Andre Smith “Melissa” all of Vernon, Randy Smith “Sue” of Turners Falls and Barry Smith “Mary” of Bernardston; two daughters, Bonnie Richotte “Robert” of Vernon and Cyndie Rowell “Donald” of Conway; a sister-in-law, Edna Sherlin of Vernon; three step-sons, Stanley Sage “Laura” and David Sage of Vernon and Stewart Sage of Malone, New York; and one step-daughter, Ruth Parker “Homer” of Northampton.
Additionally, he leaves 22 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Graveside committal services will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 A.M. in Tyler Cemetery on Pond Road in Vernon with Pastor Bruce Burks of Vernon Advent Christian Church officiating.
