Vernon- Wallace Lester, “Wally” Briggs, 95, a lifelong resident of Brattleboro died peacefully early Thursday morning, January 24, 2019 at Vernon Green Nursing Home.
Wally was born in Brattleboro on October 12, 1923, the son of Forrest and Florence (Farwell) Briggs. He was raised and educated in Brattleboro graduating from Brattleboro High School, Class of 1943.
He went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II with the 431st Bombardment Squadron Heavy serving in the Western Pacific and Asiatic Pacific Theaters and was honorably discharged from active service at the rank of Tech Sergeant in June of 1945.He later served again in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict receiving his discharge in September 1951.
Upon his honorable discharge from active service he returned home to Brattleboro and went to work for Dunham Shoe Company for 24 years eventually becoming store manager. He also had been employed at G.S. Precision for five years where he retired from.
Following retirement for ten years he manned the Brattleboro Chamber of Commerce booth on Putney Road, a position he thoroughly enjoyed.
Wally was also an accomplished actor and was involved for several years with the former Brattleboro Summer Theater.
He was a member of the V.F.W. Carl M. Dessaint Post #1034 and the American Legion, Brattleboro Post #5.
Of his leisure time activities, he enjoyed golf and held membership in the Brattleboro Country Club. He also enjoyed winter sports that including alpine skiing and ski jumping. For several years he served as a ski patroller and was a member of the Brattleboro Ski Patrol.
In April of 1954 he was married to Norma Vaillancourt. The marriage ended in divorce.
Survivors include two daughters, Kimberly Clark and her husband Peter of Keene, and Michelle Briggs of Avondale, AZ, one sister Lorraine Howe of Hinsdale, and his two grandchildren, Brian Squires and his wife Alyson and their children Hannah and Khloe of Vernon and Matthew Cobb and his wife Stephany and their daughter Alexa of Wichita Falls, TX and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He also leaves friends and caregivers, Steve and Tina Squires of Guilford, Haley Sage and her husband Jason and their children Bryer and Ryley of Brattleboro and a host of other friends.
He was predeceased by a grandson, Kevin Squires on September 16, 2006.
Graveside committal services with military honors will be conducted Monday at 10:30 A.M. in Plainview Cemetery in Leverette, MA. A reception will follow the services to be held at the American Legion on Linden Street.
The procession will leave Monday morning from the parking lot at Atamaniuk Funeral Home at 9:15 A.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Kevin Squires Memorial Scholarship, Edward Jones Financial Services, 1222 Putney Road, Brattleboro, VT 05301, in care of Philip George.
