Richard T. McCarthy, 81, of Hinsdale, NH, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2017 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH surrounded by his family. He was born July 17, 1936 in Plymouth, NH, the son of the late Thomas and Vera (Boyce) McCarthy. He and his wife, Ann Boucher McCarthy, were married for 58 years, and have been parishioners of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hinsdale for 50 years.
In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his three children; Patrick McCarthy and his wife Judy of Derry, NH, Michael McCarthy and his wife Carol of Sudbury, MA, Molly McCarthy and her husband Shaun Oparowski of Bedford, NH, as well as his eight grandchildren: Conor, Tom, Maggie, Shayne, Kate, Cormac, Hannah and Neil. He is also survived by his brother, Robert McCarthy, of South Glastonbury, CT. He was predeceased by his son, Daniel McCarthy of Portland, OR.
He received his Bachelor of Education from Plymouth Teachers College in 1958 and his M.Ed. from Boston University in 1961. Dick was an educator in NH schools for thirty nine years. He began as a physical education teacher and varsity basketball coach at Walpole, NH High School from 1958 -1966, during which time his teams won two state basketball titles. He then became the physical education teacher and first varsity basketball coach for Fall Mountain Regional High School in the fall of 1966. In 1967 he became principal of Hinsdale High School, a position he held for 18 years. From 1985 until his retirement in 1997, he was the Assistant Superintendent of Schools for SAU # 38 Monadnock Regional School District.
Dick served on the Basketball Committee for the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association from 1967-1997 and was Chairman of the Committee from 1980-1997. He was President of the NHIAA from 1972-1973. He won the NHIAA distinguished service award in 1985 and was elected to the NHIAA Hall of Fame in 2007. From 1997-1999 he also served as a member of the National Federation Basketball Rules Committee representing New England and New York.
He was appointed by Governor Peterson to the NH State Prison Parole Board in 1971, serving as its chairman from 1976-1981. He was also an Executive Board Member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges from 1976-1982.
There will be no calling hours. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 35 Brattleboro Rd., Hinsdale, NH, at 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, August 16, 2017. Reception to follow at Hinsdale Millstream Community Center, 19 Main St., Hinsdale. Burial will be held at a later date in Morgan, VT.
