Guilford - L. Elisabeth, “Betty” Costigan, 94, of Jackson Road died Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital following a period of declining health.
Betty was born in Troy, New York on June 19, 1924 the daughter of Thomas and Emma (Messerle) Burns. She was raised and educated in the Albany/Troy area attending Saint Joseph’s Parochial School, and was a graduate of Vincentian High School later attending the College of Saint Rose in Albany.
She had been employed at Northfield Mount Herman School working on both the Northfield and Gill campuses. She retired at age 80 following over 17 faithful years at the school. Previously Betty worked for 17 years in administrative offices for the State University of New York Morrisville campus.
A devout Catholic, she was a communicant of Saint Michael Roman Catholic Church in Brattleboro. For several years shed was a volunteer at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital working in the transportation Department.
Betty enjoyed gardening, reading, small animals and time shared with her family. She had the gift of finding beauty in everything and was known for being very appreciative and thankful.
She was first married to Peter George Honczar who is deceased. She later married Donald Costigan who predeceased her in 1991.
Survivors include her daughter, Suzan Brunswick of Guilford with whom she made her home, a grandson, Dale Brunswick also of Guilford and a host of friends.
Betty was predeceased by one son, Peter George Honczar, Jr. and her beloved son-in-law, Lee Brunswick.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11:00 A.M. at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church. Burial will take place in Baker Cemetery in Guilford.
Friends are invited to call at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home on Thursday from 4 to 6 P.M.
