Guilford- Shirley Cole Squiers, 80, of Guilford Center Road, a resident of Guilford for the past 65 years died Friday morning, July 13, 2018 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital following a period of declining health.
Shirley was born in Wilmington on October 22, 1937 the daughter of John and Ellen (Morgan) Cole. She was raised and educated in Wilmington attending Wilmington High School.
She had been employed as a machinist for G.S. Precision where she retired from following over 20 years of service with the company. Previously she worked for over 30 years at the former H. Margolin Pocketbook factory.
Shirley was a past member of both the F.O. Eagles, Brattleboro Aerie #2445 and the V.F.W. Carl M. Dessaint Post #1034 Auxiliary.
She had a deep love for horses and with her husband owned several throughout the years and was active with harness horse racing at Hinsdale Raceway. Shirley also enjoyed her home, playing cards and time shared with her family. She also loved dogs and was known for adopting strays and giving them a good home.
Shirley was married in Wilmington to Stillman “Stib” Squiers who predeceased her on March 12, 2014.
Survivors include two sons, Anthony “Tony” Squiers and wife Mary of Guilford and John Squiers and fiancée Chris Peck also of Guilford, a sister Connie Robinson-Knec of Wilmington, four grandchildren, Wallace, Zack, Sarah and Abigail, three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Additionally, she leaves a special son-in-law, Wallace “Skip” Bly.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Valerie Bly who passed away on April 28, 2015.
A memorial service will take place at a later date to be announced by the funeral home.
